“Buddhist Painting”, the seventh volume of “Masterpieces from the Nezu Collection, New Edition” series, has been timed to be available for “Beautiful Buddhas: Masterpieces of Buddhist Painting from the Nezu Collection“ exhibition. Exemplifying the pinnacle of Buddhist paintings of the Nezu Collection, it presents a total of seventy-eight works including National Treasure Nachi Waterfall and numerous works designated Important Cultural Properties along with pieces newly discovered to have art historical value through research and recent restoration. We hope it will serve as exhibition catalogue for the current exhibition, since thirty-six of the works on exhibit are featured.

Established in India, esoteric Buddhism was introduced to Japan via China at the beginning of the Heian period (794-1185). The ”Dainichi Nyorai” (Sk. Mahavairocana) is the ultimate Buddha who presides over the esoteric world, and is depicted like a king wearing a jeweled crown. From Nezu Museum collection, we have selected a masterpiece painting of the kingly buddha, decorated with gorgeous kirikane, cut-gold leaf, to create a new original incense befitting to this majestic beauty. With sandalwood as a base, traditional fragrances of glove and frankincense with a scent inspired by the lily of the valley would be a cool refreshment.

Slide out the lid lining to open the apertures and the sweet, gentle fragrance from the sachet inside will drift out. The kakitsubata design is based on Ogata Kōrin's Irises folding screens, a National Treasure, in our museum's collection. Enjoy this lovely scent box and the fragrance it adds to your life.
