Ryōkan(1758-1831)was a Zen priest who traveled all over Japan and then settled in the Echigo region where he lived a reclusive life shunning the vulgar, everyday world. When he received requests for calligraphy, he would respond with elegantly spare, wittily awkward calligraphic works.
