Standing Fudō-myōō (Acalanatha)

  • Japan Heian period, 12th century
  • Polychromed wood
  • h: 92.0cm
  • [20013]

During the Heian period the Buddhist deity Fudō's usually fierce expression was rendered instead in a lofty, elegantly majestic form. This sculpture is typical of such aesthetics, and it is a superior example featuring cut-gold leaf and colored decorations on the deity's garments.
