This is a famous example of Japanese makie lacquer art, decorated with an image of a stag baying in an autumnal field. This work is said to have been formerly in the collection of the Muromachi period shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. Japanese characters spelling out a waka poem are scattered through the design.
