Kongōkai Mandala with Eighty-one Deities

  • Japan Kamakura period, 13th century
  • Hanging scroll; ink and color on silk
  • h: 216cm w: 209.8cm
  • [10012]

This mandala depicts the jōjinne (also known as the katsuma'e) central precinct of the nine precinct Kongōkai or Diamond Realm Mandala. The majestic expressions of the figures and the strong use of red shading reveal the Chinese iconography and styles of the model work brought from China to Japan by the Japanese priest Ennin during the 9th century.
